Krav Maga (contact combat) is a military self-defence and fighting system developed for the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) and Israeli security forces. It has since been further developed for civilian training and spread around the world.
Krav Maga is derived from a combination of techniques sourced from many other martial arts such as Boxing, Wrestling, Aikido, Judo, Karate along with realistic fight training. Krav Maga is known for its focus on real-world situations and its extreme efficiency. It has no consideration for the well-being of the aggressor and is not bound by any rules, except to stay safe legally (if you’re a civilian using it).
Today, it’s a go-to self defence system for military special forces, law enforcement, security professionals and civilians across the world.
When attending a Krav Maga school, weekly classes and events will cover the spectrum of skills needed for real-life self defence today.
From situational awareness, body language skills, human behaviour and criminal psychology to help prevent becoming a victim, through conflict management and deescalation skills to reduce incidence of violence.
You will learn highly effective combat and protection skills to handle any kind of physical aggression or threats, as well as the legal and medical knowledge to keep you safe during and after any violence.
Krav Maga will teach you how to look after yourself and your family and friends.
With no previous experience or minimum fitness level required, classes provide a unique opportunity for people of any age, any martial arts tenure and any background to learn the tactics, techniques and thinking of the most effective self defence system in the world.
This isn’t sport. It’s not a martial art. It is however your opportunity to build confidence, fitness and a particular set of skills few people have.
Krav Maga is created for you. Because we all know, sometimes you must be your own hero.
These are some of the key reasons why you should take up Krav Maga and this is what you should experience if you do.
COMMUNITY
Krav Maga is a community of brothers and sisters with a bond more akin to soldiers in a war.
Why? Because the training demands that we trust our bodies as training objects to others for the most complete practice and this shared and trusting experience causes practitioners to feel a sense of family and community that extends beyond the actual practice sessions and into friendly face to face and social media relationships.
TEAMWORK
Because practitioners work with each other, although purely training for themselves, but without any competitions, they become obsessed with helping each other.
Great skills for your training partner will mean great opportunity for you to train well, stay safe and learn, too. This lack of individual ambition to be better than anyone else and concern with others make up a selfless and altruistic team environment.
UNIVERSALITY
Although military in origin and used by special forces, law enforcement and security professionals, Krav Maga as a self defence system is designed for everyone.
Naturally, as with any mechanical, motor-skill and physical movement, it will be enhanced by existing natural abilities in these areas, but it is not dependent on brute force, previous martial arts experience or long term practice before some skill acquisition is obtained.
It is especially useful for women, relying of speed, precision and smart thinking rather than muscle mass or strength. It’s also applicable to children and teenagers in a revised version.
CONSISTENCY
Just like other martial arts, sports, dancing, playing an instrument or even everyday hobbies, consistent training is required to become better and better, if that’s your goal.
It also requires hard work, from which your health and well-being will prosper. Be prepared for your system to have to adjust for a while, just like if you took up a new sport or physical activity. After a short while, your body and mind will start to adapt.
Ignore the occasional bruises, pain or cuts, comparatively to team sports or even other physical training, Krav Maga is safe. Of course, where individuals move in a dynamic environment with the intent to recreate close combat striking, the occasional badge of honour of a bruise or two will occur, however safety in training rules removes any regularity of severe injury.
CONFIDENCE
Soon after starting Krav Maga, your new-found abilities will start to shape your life in ways you didn’t expect.
Situational awareness will teach you to see the world around you more clearly and with greater analytical skills.
An inner strength will shape more steeliness and confidence in handling others and new situations. More positive energy and thinking - as more fear or apprehension dissipates - will relax you in both your social and professional spheres.
